Rufous Hawk

Chapter 16

Brothers

July 1:

Only two little hawks remain, both of them male. I cannot help but wonder if they are aware of the absence of their sassy big sister. And do Rufous and Roxie know that she is missing.... and why? My opinion... A family of fledgling hawks, no matter how small, is so filled with the frenetic business of existence that both parents and fledglings must focus all their energy on the moment..

Brothers

The two brothers often hang out together. I suppose that creates a better chance of being at the right spot at the right time when Mom or Dad show up with a meal. And who gets the food? From what I can see, it seems to be the hungriest one. Both hawklets will fly squealing when a parent appears on the scene, but only one comes away with the prize. The other one just sits and watches.... unless it is hungry too, in which case there is a fight, or at least a challenge.

In these photos, both little hawks seem pretty well satisfied. One is facing away from the usual view of incoming food. The other one is relaxed and stretches, wings spread for cooling in the July Texas heat.

Brothers

Then the little hawk becomes so relaxed he decides to stretch out on the limb for a rest.
